Rolled or layered gold was patented in England in 1817 and became a prime source for semi precious and quality jewellery in Victorian times. Using rolled gold allowed designers to create and sell intricate pieces without the high cost of solid gold. Rolled gold had a renewed surge in popularity in the 1920s and 1930s.
