Jewellery makers used a Rhodium or Chrome overlay to keep the pieces shiny and bright and rhodium is used today to coat white gold and sterling to keep it bright. The base metals were usually sterling, white gold , platinum or mixed white metals and it is unknown unless filed into which would damage the item.
